The Andrews Labor government has ignored the significant road safety and security issues at Yarra Boulevard for the last 4 and a half years, placing the safety of thousands of local cyclists at risk.
Daniel Andrews and Labor have ignored the desperate pleas of local cyclists to take action against the culprits who are placing lives at risk.
The Liberal Nationals have been calling on the Andrews Labor Government to do something about anti-social behaviour and hoon drivers, and for greater resources for Victoria Police to apprehend the individuals who have been laying tacks, to dangerously puncture the tyres of cyclists, for years.
Labor’s announcement today is a politically motivated stunt compared to the real announcement by the Federal Member for Kooyong, Josh Frydenberg MP, who only three weeks ago announced the Federal Liberal Government would invest $5 million immediately for improved CCTV, lighting, and speed inhibitors on Yarra Boulevard.
In Mr Frydenberg’s media release of 16 April he said; “The Yarra Boulevard in Kew will receive $5 million in Federal Government funding to provide much-needed safety and security measures, including new CCTVs, new lighting and speed inhibitors. The Yarra Boulevard has been the site of over 40 crashes in recent years. These new measures are designed to combat speeding and hooning issues while taking into account the needs of cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.”
Today’s announcement by state Labor Minister Ben Carroll is just playing catch-up; $110,000 from Labor compared to $5 million from the Liberals.
Josh Frydenberg listened to the calls from local Liberal State MPs, the local community including the Yarra Boulevard Action Group, and Boroondara Council; ensuring priority funding for a range of safety measures on Yarra Boulevard are implemented as soon as possible.
The primary responsibility for Yarra Boulevard lies with VicRoads, the state highway authority. Labor Roads Ministers have been doing absolutely nothing about these public safety issues for the last 4 and a half years.
Only Josh Frydenberg, Tim Smith and the Victorian Liberals are serious about protecting cyclists and road users along Yarra Boulevard.
